Updates from Parkland-area crime shooting scene

Updates from Parkland-area crime shooting scene
New information from Ed Troyer:

It appears one of the slain officers fought with the gunman. The struggle started inside the coffee shop and went just outside the door, Troyer said.

The officer was able to fire his weapon. It’s not known if the suspect was injured.

UPDATE: The gunman walked into the coffee shop and shot two of the Lakewood officers as they sat down. The other two officers stood up.

One officer was killed. The fourth officer fought the gunman.

Troyer reiterated that there’s been no specific threats against area law enforcement officers.

“This is something that happened on its own, without warning,” Troyer said.

ATF is now on the scene, assisting with the investigation.

Troyer said that the coffee shop was a common gathering spot for Lakewood and Tacoma police officers and Pierce County sheriff’s deputies. The shop is two blocks from Lakewood, two blocks from Tacoma and within the county’s jurisdiction.

“It’s a safe spot,” said Troyer, where officers can plug in their computers, work and share information.

3 P.M. UPDATE

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office will be moving the bodies of the four slain officers in the next hour or two. When that occurs, a motorcade of Lakewood police officers will escort the bodies to the Medical Examiner’s Office, Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

Investigators have been clearing buildings in the area and talking to people. One of those locations was Evergreen Self Storage on 112th Street.

“There was somebody in there but it was not the suspect,” Troyer said.

UPDATE: From reporter Scott Fontaine …

Antonio Robinson, who lives in a nearby apartment complex, had a different take on the crime situation in the neighborhood. The 28-year-old works the graveyard shift at a nearby gas station and said the area takes a different personality at night.

“It’s a whole different place at night,” said Robinson, who has lived in the area for three years. “Looks can be deceiving.”

Robinson said he often watched people being arrested at night. He also saw a woman attacked in a drive-by shooting two years ago.

“It doesn’t surprise me that four people had been shot,” he said. “It is surprising that four cops were shot, though.”

1:20 P.M. UPDATE

There’s still not much new to report.

Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer estimates hundreds of officers – many off duty – have responded to the scene to lend a hand and their support. Tactical officers from King County and Seattle police are there.

Investigators told three news crews who were in a nearby neighborhood to move along.

Troyer described the crime scene as “horrific.”

12:40 P.M. BRIEFING:

A short time ago, officers checked out a 911 call from someone who claimed to the shooter. It was not, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said who spoke at a 12:40 p.m. press briefing.

“We are trying to figure out why that happened,” Troyer said. “It was a non-issue.”

Investigators are watching a couple of vehicles. They’ve found one home empty. They are looking in several cities, Troyer said.

“We appreciate the tips coming in,” Troyer said.

He reiterated that investigators have no motive for the slaying. Detectives are talking to the witnesses. Troyer is waiting to hear from the detectives.

Troyer said investigators are tracking video from multiple sources, looking for images of the suspect. He was last seen running away on foot.

Troyer said the four slain officers worked as a patrol team.

NOON UPDATE:

Reporter Mike Archbold reports there are roughly 75 marked and unmarked police cars at the scene.

The Pierce County Search and Rescue have arrived on the scene.

The suspect came into the coffee shop and opened fire. The slain officers were wearing bulletproof vests.

Rebecca Radcliffe, manager of the Subway Shop on the corner of 112th and Steele streets, said four officers would often come in on Sunday and stay two to three hours. She didn’t know them personally.

The officers would talk to Radcliffe about Lakewood and the apartment complex where she lived.

“Nothing like this has happened like this before,” she said. “It’s still a little scary to know that people out there are like this.”

Next to the Subway is a Extra Mile convenience store where Samuel Munson works Saturdays and Sundays. He said a couple of Lakewood officers are regulars at the store. He doesn’t know them personally.

“I don’t see much crime here,” Munson said. “I don’t feel unsafe. I keep a couple of things with me.”

He said a couple of kids ran off with some beer Saturday night.

UPDATE: Crime scene technicians are working at the coffee shop.

Four officers shot dead at coffee shop near Parkland south of Tacoma

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Four officers shot dead at coffee shop near Parkland south of Tacoma

Four local police officers were killed this morning at a Parkland-area coffee shop south of Tacoma.

The gunman walked into the coffee shop and shot two of the Lakewood officers as they sat down. The other two officers stood up. One officer was killed. The fourth officer fought the gunman and may have injured him. The officer was able to fire his weapon said Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

Troyer reiterated that there’s been no specific threats against area law enforcement officers. “This is something that happened on its own, without warning,” Troyer said.

Dozens of investigators backed by search dogs and a helicopter were hunting for the killer. ATF is now on the scene, assisting with the investigation.

Witnesses described the killer as a black man, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-9, in his 20s or 30s, with scruffy facial hair, wearing a black coat and blue jeans.

He walked into the Forza coffee shop at 11401 S. Steele St. about 8:15 a.m. and opened fire with a handgun on the four officers, who were at a table doing preshift paperwork.

The man then fled southbound.

The officers – three men and one woman – all worked for the Lakewood Police Department. All were in uniform and were wearing bulletproof vests. Their families have been notified, Troyer said.

They are the first Lakewood officers killed in the line of duty since the department was formed in 2004.

“This was an execution, no doubt,” Troyer said. “This was a targeted attack.”

Lakewood city leaders called the event horrific, and said they would do what they can to take care of the officers’ families.

“I think it is Lakewood’s saddest day,” Lakewood City Councilman Walter Neary said.

Former Lakewood Police Chief Larry Saunders, now an Army officer at Fort Lewis, said he was shocked by the killings.

“I’m horrified. I just can’t believe the news,” Saunders told The News Tribune by telephone from Canada, where he was skiing.

“I’m the old guy around there, and I kind of feel like they’re my sons and daughters,” Saunders continued. “They clearly are the very best Washington has to offer. I’m heartbroken over this.”

The Champions Centre will hold a prayer vigil tonight for the slain officers and their families. The vigil is at 6 p.m. at 1819 E. 72nd St., Tacoma, according to the church’s Twitter account.

The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department will be the lead investigating agency on the homicides.

Sheriff Paul Pastor addressed the assembled news media at the scene about 12:20 p.m. Pastor said law enforcement was working as “rapidly as possible” to catch the gunman.

“This is an example of the danger police officers, deputy sheriff’s and state troopers face every day,” Pastor said. “We’ve lost people that we care about.”

The gunman not only “harmed us, they harmed the good we can do in the community,” the sheriff said.

Troyer said if anyone sees police activity, to stay away.

Law enforcement officials from all over the region have responded to the scene, and crime-scene technicians were inside the coffee shop about noon gathering evidence. Search-and-rescue crews also were called in, presumably to look for evidence.

The Sheriff’s Department is in the process of notifying next of kin and co-workers. “We are having a lot of colleagues wake up to this news,” Troyer said.

The baristas and two customers inside were not injured.

Police are possibly looking for another person and are searching multiple places, including residences and parking lot, Troyer said at a news briefing. There is no information on the motive for the deadly killing. There was no preexisting threat against the officers.

As of right now, there is no link to the Oct. 31 slaying of Seattle police officer Timothy Brenton, who was gunned down as he and a colleague sat in a patrol car in Seattle. Police have arrested a man in connection with that case.

The Sheriff’s Department has set up a special tips line: 1-866-977-2362. Tipsters also can call Crime Stoppers at 253-591-5959. There is a $10,000 reward.

Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said he’s following the developments in the slaying of the four officers. “Our hearts go out to the families,” he said. “One of our main concerns right now is we still have some crazy coldblooded killer or killers on the loose.”

The coffee shop is located near an industrial park area and a Coca Cola distribution plants. It borders McChord Air Force Base.

Mike Bostwick drove the coffee shop this morning as just as a couple of police cars were arriving moments after the shooting.

“I saw three vehicles pulling into Forza right off the bat,” he said. “I was trying to say out of the way.” Bostwick said the officers have been working on gang issues in the area. “I feel safe again,” he said. “I think the response is wonderful.”

Jim Waldeck of Spanaway said he was on his way to Ralph’s Tavern for a cup of coffee like every day. He drove by the coffee shop and saw two Lakewood cars out front. “That’s not unusual,” Waldeck said. “It’s pretty scary.”

At Rollies Tavern nearby, the plasma TVs usually tuned to football had Northwest Cable News on.

Three bar patrons live next door to the Forza.

Jerry Arnold, 45, was in bed when he was awakened by sirens. He’s lived there seven years and never seen anything close to Sunday’s scene. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” he said. “It’s always been a nice area to live. “I hope they get them. I can’t sleep until they do. Those guys could be hiding in my backyard.”

Drew Ruttin, 29, says the area is relatively low-crime: “it’s a busy enough thoroughfare that it stays safe. But this is just crazy.”

David Gabrielson, 27, lives in the Willow Park Apartments across the street. He’s a cashier at the nearby 76 station. He got into work at 8. At 8:30 to 8:45 a.m., “the cops started going crazy. Tons of cars blaring their sirens,” he said. “This neighborhood’s not that bad. At least I used to think so.”

Initial research suggests that the shooting of four Lakewood police officers ranks as the worst attack on law enforcement in state history.

Nationally, the worst incident involving law enforcement casualties is the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Reports from that incident say 72 police officers were killed, though the circumstances differ. Officers and other emergency workers responding to the attacks died in the course of rescue attempts as opposed to direct confrontations with assailants.

In March of this year, four Oakland, Calif., police officers were fatally shot – the worst casualty count in that state since 1970, when four highway patrolmen were killed.

Lakewood Police Chief Brett Farrar is visiting the families of the slain officers now. He is expected to brief reporters later today

Wikileaks publishes 570,000 messages capturing chaos of 9/11

Wikileaks publishes 570,000 messages capturing chaos of 9/11
The mental and emotional storm that struck America on 11 September 2001 with the attacks on New York and Washington has been recreated with the release of more than half a million pager messages sent on that day.

The whistleblowing website Wikileaks published the messages over a 24-hour period beginning on Tuesday at dawn, releasing them in batches in chronological order as if in real time. The massive archive includes thousands of messages from US officials including Pentagon workers and New York police, as well as members of the public from all over America, which together provide an insight into the initial chaos and confusion, followed by a dawning horror as 9/11 unfolded.

The released messages begin by underlining what an ordinary day it had started out to be. At 7.55am CNN puts out its world news headlines: Israel has surrounded yet another West Bank city; Michael Jordan is making yet another return to pro basketball “for the love of the game”.

By 8.18am, four minutes after American Airlines flight 11 was hijacked en route from Boston to Los Angeles, the country is gearing itself up for work. “Not good yesterday goal $21,175. actual $11,455,” came one message.

At 8.46 and 46 seconds, six seconds after flight 11 crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Centre, the following message is paged: “Market data inconsistent … Cantor API problem Trading system offline.” The global financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald had its offices on the 101st to 105th floors of the north tower and lost 658 employees in the devastation.

Quickly, the media began catching up with events, and viewers were picking up on the news. At 8.50am Karen sends out a message saying: “CNN SAID THEY THINK IT WAS A PLANE THAT HIT THE BLDG.”

Most of the messages put out by Wikileaks have nothing to do with the events of that fateful day, being routine service messages and random communications between individuals. But amid the fog of thousands of messages, they build up a picture of a pre-eminent event in history.

The website has declined to reveal how it obtained the documents. All it would say on the subject was: “It is clear that the information comes from an organisation which has been intercepting and archiving US national telecommunications since prior to 9/11.”

It added: “We hope that its entry into the historical record will lead to a more nuanced understanding of how this tragedy and its aftermath may have been prevented.”

Several of the pager messages point to the mass of confusion and rumour-mongering that set in after the first plane hit the north tower. At 8.50am a message says that a bomb has been detonated in the World Trade Centre.

A minute later, Teresa messages: “THE WORLD TRADE CENTER HAS JUST BLOWN UP, WE SEEN THE EXPLOSION OUTSIDE OUR WINDOWS.”

By 8.53am, seven minutes after the plane went in, the New York police operations division is still in the dark. “POSSIBLE EXPLOSION WORLD TRADE CENTER BUILDING,” it tells its officers as it announces the start of its highest-level mobilisation to downtown Manhattan.

Meanwhile, for many, ordinary life continues. Also at 8.53am, Melissa messages her loved one: “Did you turn the iron off?” and Heather sends a message that reads: “Why don’t YOU come sit on MY lap and kiss me :-) ”.

But elsewhere, anxiety is starting to set in. Numerous notes are sent urging colleagues, friends and relatives to tune in to what is happening. “TURN ON CNN Sat channel 202 ASAP!” says Robert Sargent.

Then, equally swiftly, come the messages pleading for information that will indicate loved ones are safe: “LARRY, CALL BRIAN. WANT TO KNOW IF OUR MEN ARE OKAY, SAW A PLANE HIT BLDG.”

At that point, most people thought it was a small plane, and probably an accident, but many were worried none the less. “A SMALL PLANE CRASHED INTO THE WORLD TRADE CTR IN N.Y. JUST NOW. CALL ME, LOVE YOUR WIFE.”

Panic sets in only after the south tower is hit at 9.03am. “HUGE explosion just rocked the World Trade Center,” comes a text a minute later. “The second tower is now on fire.”

Once again, confusion reigned. A message sent at 9.04am said that the fuselage of the first plane at the north tower had caused a second explosion – misinterpreting the second strike at the south tower.

Through the morning, false leads multiply as terror sets in. A mistaken alarm is put out about a car bomb in downtown Washington, a report of “two Arab males” detained at the presidential retreat at Camp David, and a text that an aircraft had hit the White House.

But the scale and nature of the attacks is also quickly realised. The first mention of a “terrorist attack” comes at 9.05am, just two minutes after the second plane strikes.

By 10.48am, 20 minutes after both the towers have collapsed, the finger is already being pointed at al-Qaida by individual pagers.

“I guess we are not going tonight!” messages Duane. “I want some Bin Landen [sic] ass!”

Dubai World Seeks Debt Standstill
DUBAI — This debt-laden city-state said Wednesday it would restructure its largest corporate entity, Dubai World, a conglomerate spanning real estate and ports, and announced a six-month standstill on the group’s debt.

The surprise move quickly sapped investor confidence in Dubai ‘s ability to pay down its large debt load, sharply increasing the price of insuring against a default. It also represents the most significant fallout so far in the city-state’s yearlong economic crisis, triggered by a collapse in its once-booming real-estate sector late last year.

In response to the news, both Moody’s Investors Service and Standard & Poor’s heavily …

Philippines massacre: 25 journalists named

The latest assessment of the people killed in the Philippines massacre claims that 27 journalists were among the total of 57 deaths.

It is possible that the journalistic toll may rise. There is difficulty in identifying some bodies, according to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines.

Two journalists thought to have been in the ambushed convoy – Reynaldo “Bebot” Momay and Lindo Lupogan – have been reported as missing. So far, 25 journalist victims have been named.

Al Jazeera report by Marga Ortigas Prosecutors in Manila are preparing to file murder charges today against Andal Ampatuan Jr, a member of the family said to control Maguindanao, the province in the southern Philippines where the massacre occurred.

Ampatuan, who is a mayor, is a supporter of President Gloria Arroyo, who has declared a state of emergency in the province.

It is thought that the killings were linked to his hostility to another mayor, Ismael Mangudadatu, who is to stand for the governorship of the province in opposition to Ampatuan’s father.

Mangudadatu’s wife and sisters were killed in the massacre. Yesterday he filed his nomination papers to run as governor. It was the task his relatives were on their way to completing on Monday when they were ambushed by more than 100 gunmen.

Philippine elections are often marred by bloodshed. About 126 candidates and supporters were killed in the months leading to the 2007 elections and 186 in 2004.

GLOBAL MARKETS: European Stocks Extend Losses On Dubai Woes

GLOBAL MARKETS: European Stocks Extend Losses On Dubai Woes

By Ishaq Siddiqi
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
LONDON (Dow Jones)–European stocks were lower again Friday, extending Thursday’s losses as concerns over the health of the global economy continued to mount on the debt problems at Dubai World.

Meanwhile, the yen and the dollar were firmer, as were bonds, while gold and oil prices were weaker, all on a flight to safety prompted by the situation in Dubai. European credit market spreads moved wider too as the appetite for risky assets continued to wane.

“Markets appear to be in a state of flux at the minute… The lack of action from the U.S. (due to Thanksgiving Thursday), and the perilous situation that Dubai finds itself in, has created some light panic amongst traders,” said Brian Myers, an analyst at ODL Securities.

Traders continued to use the Dubai World debt problem as an excuse to take cash off the table, with deteriorating U.S. stock futures and a slump in Asian markets overnight adding further weight to the downside. However, some traders said Thursday’s decline was “overdone” and had prompted some buying activity as investors looked to snap up some stocks perceived as cheap.

By 0855 GMT, the pan-European Stoxx 600 index was off 0.7% at 238.23. London’s FTSE 100 index had lost 0.6% at 5162.92, Frankfurt’s DAX index was down 0.7% at 5576.73 and the CAC-40 index in Paris was 0.7% lower at 3654.15.

The biggest macro takeaway from the Dubai story is that, despite the months of unprecedented monetary stimulus, debt remains a structural concern, said Ian Williams, strategist at Altium Securities. “Investors need to remember that central banks have been forced to use the policy approach that arguably caused these problems in the first place: excessively loose money. That’s a short-term fix rather than a long-term cure,” added Williams.

Economists at Credit Suisse added that the extent of the impact on global financial markets of Dubai World’s announcement will depend crucially on the manner in which the restructuring is handled by Dubai World/the government of Dubai and the government of Abu Dhabi. “The scale of debt that is subject to restructuring is large and adds to the risk that the finish to the year for the global credit markets will be sluggish,” they said.

In Asia early Friday, stock markets fell, with financial shares bearing the brunt of the losses as nervous investors worried about the banks’ exposure to Dubai World’s debt.

Risky currencies also sold off as Dubai World, the city state’s largest corporate entity, asked creditors for a six-month standstill on debt repayments of $59 billion. Investors piled into safe-haven bets like the yen, which rose to a fresh 14-year high against the dollar and hurt Japanese exporters’ stocks.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 was down 3.2% while South Korea’s Kospi Composite was down 4.6%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was last seen down 4.5%.

Year-end window dressing has taken a rather nasty turn, with risk being furiously sold, as sentiment soured sharply, said David Watt, senior currency strategist at RBC Capital Markets. “Fallout from Dubai World seeking a debt moratorium has been broad. It is not the amount involved ($59 billion) but potential contagion that will drive markets,” added Patrick Bennett, Asia rates strategist at Societe Generale.

The foreign exchange markets saw a broad move out of currencies perceived as more risk sensitive, with the euro taking a hit as the European markets’ reaction Thursday to the Dubai news reversed the recent “risk on” trades.

Japanese exporter stocks were weaker too as the yen’s climb against the dollar reached heights not seen in almost 15 years. The greenback hit a 14-year low of Y84.82 before recovering some ground to trade at Y86.35 at 0900 GMT, down from Y86.59 late Thursday.

Elsewhere, the euro was trading at $1.4871, down from $1.5020, and sterling was quoted at $1.6363, down from $1.6461.

Spot gold was trading at $1153.05 per troy ounce, down $35.20, while crude oil futures extended their falls, with Nymex January crude down $4.14 at $73.82 per barrel. In the European bond markets, December bunds were up 0.23 at 123.77.

In the credit markets, the cost of insuring sovereign debt issued by Dubai rose to 674.8 basis points from 541 bps late Thursday. More generally, credit spreads were again wider on the day as risk aversion continued to rise. And the spreads between European sovereign bonds and German bunds climbed, with Greek bonds hitting a new high over their German counterparts.

Stock index futures pointed to a lower start on Wall Street, with the December Dow Jones Industrial Average future down 2.4% but the Standard & Poor’s 500 December future down a more modest 0.9%.
